Trimethoprim
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic which
comes in tablet form and is very often prescribed to treat cystitis or prevent infections
in women who suffer from these problems recurrently. It is often more effective
than other medications which can treat the symptoms but not cure the actual
infection.
How it works
The medication works by targeting the
bacteria, stopping its ability to create DNA, which is needed in order to
reproduce. Once the bacteria is unable to multiply, the body’s defences will be
able to eliminate it from the body. When taken as a preventative treatment it
can avoid an infection from occurring altogether.
Side effects
Trimethoprim is unlikely to cause side
effects, although in some people it can cause nausea, vomiting and rashes. If
you experience persistent or more serious side effects you should contact your
doctor as there may be a different medication which will be more beneficial for
you.
