Cystitis
Cystitis is a bladder infection which
mostly affects women and can cause very unpleasant symptoms usually associated
with urination, such as pain, stinging or a feeling of constant need to
urinate. It can also cause abdominal pain backache. Cystitis is less likely to
occur when women have showers instead of baths, drink plenty of water and wash
before and after sex.
Causes of cystitis
Cystitis is caused by bacteria in the
urinary tracts, which can be passed during sex or from the anus. It can also
occur if you do not empty your bladder completely when urinating. Soaps, bubble
baths and tight clothing can also trigger an infection.
Treatment for cystitis
Cystitis is usually treated by drinking
lots of water and cranberry juice and the use of painkillers to alleviate
symptoms. Some serious infections may also require antibiotics, which can be
successful in curing the infection within just two days.
Trimethoprim
Trimethoprim is a treatment which can prevent cystitis long term
or treat it effectively when taken in higher doses for shorter periods.
